games after RF2), and I couldn't make myself finish it. The one thing that people will consistently say brings the series down is the runey system, but that's actually quite easy to manage if you use a strategy called a "grass factory." (Which you can find instructions for if you do a bit of Googling.) That way, you only have to take a couple minutes every 3 in-game days to do any runey distribution.Īs far as ToD, it was my least favorite of the "modern" games (ie. Finally, it has the ability to choose how you upgrade your house, which I thought was a cool idea in terms of customization that was sadly missing from later games. I also thought the rest of the townspeople were great, too, and it has my favorite soundtrack. Plus, the bathhouse scenes are really cute and funny. I must have replayed the game a good four or five times just to marry all of my favorites. Personally, I preferred Frontier, as I felt like it had the best bachelorettes in the series in terms of both variety and likeable characters. Clunky combat, long loading screens every five seconds, slow animations, and without spoilers, probably the least satisfying ending of an RPG I've ever seen that leaves more questions than answers. This means you could see all five of those lines in a single day, meaning there is next to no reason to talk to anyone since you've seen everything. Bland ass characters that say the same five lines every day and with how socializing works in this game, talking to people doesn't necessarily repeat the dialogue in case you misread something or clicked through too quick, it just gives you a line in the pool of possible dialogue. It's got its die hard fans, but dear god I struggle to find a single good thing to say about it beyond "it looks nice" and most of the complaints I have about it don't even touch the god forsaken Runey System. It's such a weird system, but if you can figure out the monster situation (which btw, I saved my setup, so if you want a good one, hmu) it's really not so bad. You can also haggle to get better prices. Anyone who you can buy from, you can sell to. Your monsters grow your crops, so you'll need to figure out a good setup to give you the best output, and then you sell your stuff (crops, accessories, weapons, etc.) to the vendors in town. There is no watering can, no seeds, no shipping bin. Though in terms of the farming and day to day stuff, it's definitely the black sheep of the series. The plot is pretty short, as you only have to beat 2 and a half dungeons to complete it, but it takes ages to reach there with the poorly done difficulty curve (I had to reach Lv.60+ just to beat the 2nd boss). The townies are all pretty bland and one note too. Raguna returns to be the protag, along with basically every girl from RF1. On top of boring combat gameplay, they decided to add Runey Management to it, which eventually leads to crops dying really fast if you just play through ignoring the Runeys. I personally recommend skipping Frontier entirely. I highly recommend giving this one a shot. The plot is also pretty good too, though it's considerably shorter than RF4 (but longer than 3). It has hands down the best combat in the series thus far, and the townies are all pretty solid! the Farming of Olde was borderline gutted for something far more streamlined so you could quickly wrap up your daily chores and get back to the townies, the requests, or the dungeon crawling ASAP.
